Buffet Tables: Tips for Getting and Setting One Up

Buffet tables, also known as sideboards, are a great addition to any home. These furniture pieces have been in existence for ages and are available in a wide variety of styles and designs. Similar furniture pieces are buffet cabinets and buffet hutches but a buffet table has the advantage of taking up less space while serving the same function.

Apart from serving as great pieces for holding food for your buffets and dinner parties, buffet tables also provide ample storage space for your small items such as silverware, plates, cups and other crockery, eliminating unnecessary clutter. An additional benefit is that you can convert your buffet table to a decorative piece when not used for culinary purposes. This can serve the purpose of displaying your framed photos, plaques and other memorabilia.

Several factors should be considered before making a decision on the type of buffet table to acquire. These include: available space in your home, purpose for the table, style and decorative features of your home, your budget and your taste. However, whatever your decision, be sure to get the best available within your constraints as this is usually a one-time investment.

Several types are available and these include:

•    large/small server buffet tables with drawers,

•    ebony/oak buffet tables with shelves,

•    kitchen buffet tables with hutch.

Numerous other combinations are available and you should definitely check out several furniture stores, comparing styles, make, designs, and prices (don’t just go for cheap buffet tables though!), before purchasing any. You can even be a little bit daring and go for a mirrored one, or, express your colour preference (black or white buffet table).

After purchasing your sideboard, the next consideration is where and how to set it up. The natural inclination is to set up your buffet table flush against the wall; this should be avoided. Depending on the available space, it should be set up in a place where guests can approach it from both sides. Apart from easing up movement, it also serves as an effective ice breaker, allowing interaction amongst your guests when you are hosting parties or buffets. However, if more space is desired, you can always create this by moving your sideboard against the wall.

You need to make sure that you have enough party plates on your beautiful buffet table so that even the most demanding guest of yours will be able to find something of his taste.

It is not easy to make the perfect buffet table setting but I strongly believe that if you follow the simple steps I outlined above, you will be set to host whatever parties or buffet you choose—at home, in a hotel or an office.

Buffet Table: A Decorating Guide for Any Occasion

If you are going to be throwing a party and entertaining guests soon, one of the most important things you must do is set up a buffet table. Buffet tables are always the most important attractions at any gathering Even if you’re not expecting many guests, you should still fill the table up with a lot of food. It’s better to have too much than not enough. Furthermore, you should use your best dinnerware sets and silverware.

Before you decorate your buffet table, you need to think about the theme for the occasion. Is it going to be a holiday celebration? A family reunion? Graduation or birthday party? If it’s a Valentine’s celebration, for example, you could use a red or pink tablecloth and matching décor. Heart-shaped candles and napkins set around the table will look great.

If you’re just planning a casual gathering, you can still be creative with at theme. For instance, you can incorporate seasonal colors on the buffet table. Since spring is coming up soon, perhaps a flowery theme will be a good choice. You will need a lot of bright, colorful decorations and tableware. Set out a strawberry or apple pie on the table for the dessert! And, of course, you can have some daisies or sunflowers set out around the table.

As for the tablecloth, your best bet is to go with a neutral color, such as white, gray, brown, or some kind of light pastel. Add a touch of elegance by having an extra long table cloth spread all the way to the floor! The linens will look best on the buffet table if they are of alternating colors. Use at least two or three linen colors that look great with the tablecloth. Since the latter is a neutral color, you can choose bright or bold linen colors if you want.

Always put the main decorative item in the center of the buffet table, in the middle of the line of dishes. Smaller decorations, such as flowers and tea lights, need to be placed all along the buffet line. Experiment with the arrangement to see how they look in a variety of settings. Just don’t place too many decorations in one spot. You can be bold with the décor, but don’t overdo it!

In addition to setting a theme, you will also need to think about the number of people you are going to serve and the traffic around the buffet table. If you are expecting a lot of guests, you will want the traffic flow around the table to go smoothly and quickly. Do this by setting out utensils, plates, and main course on the side of the table at which you want them to begin. Also, set the decorative items out of the way of guests as they reach for the food. You don’t want anybody to knock over the decorations and make a mess on your buffet table!
